What You'll Find Here:

Of course there will be pictures & videos of my beautiful boys, but I am also going to post information that I find helpful to share with my fellow mommies out there, either SAHM or working! I consider running the household my job, not just raising children, so it is my responsibility to save money wherever I can! One way I do that is with couponing. On average, I spend less than $80 per week on all our household needs. No, not just food. This is toiletries, paper goods, cleaning supplies, diapers, & anything else you can think of! And we don't do without around here! Most all of what I buy is name brand & very little is off-brand. There is nothing wrong with off-brand, but manufacturers put out tons of coupons to get you to buy their products.

An Average Publix Shopping Trip

Here is what all I bought on my last Publix run. Sorry, no breakdown. I'm a little short on time. I got diapers for less than $15 but that made my total a little higher than I wanted it to be. After coupons, some of my better deals were: frozen veggies were $0.75, Nature Valley Bars were $0.50 each, Penny Item was peanut butter, Dove deodorant was FREE after stacking a manufacturer & store coupon. I also had a $10 off coupon from Winn Dixie plus a few more. I ended up with a grand total of $44.28 before tax, with a savings of $39.05!!!!!
(Some of you may have noticed that I don't have usually have any meat purchases, but I usually stock up when it is on sale. I have a $0.50 off coupon, which doubles to $1 off of a pound of ground beef so I buy it by the pound when it is on sale & freeze it. You can't beat ground beef for less than $0.60 per pound!! We also buy steaks from the "Meat Man" which is MUUUCH cheaper when you buy in bulk. Plus he delivers!)

Coupon Clipping Saves How Much??

I went to CVS the other day & ended up saving $46.66! I spent only $19 before tax! Here is what all I got: (**pic to come**)
-20 Assorted Chocolate Santas - Regular Price $0.75, on sale for $0.50 each
-2 Bags of Holiday Hershey Kisses - Regular Price $3.49 on sale for $3.00 each
-2 Bags of Holiday M&Ms - Regular Price $5.99 on sale for $4.00
-4 small bags of M&Ms - Regular Price $0.89, on sale for $0.50 each (great prizes for the kiddos!)
-1 Glade Scented Oils Candle Holder - Regular Price $4.69 on sale for $3.00 MINUS $3.00 coupon makes it FREE!
-1 Glade Candle Refill - Regular Pice $.3.49 on sale for $3.00 MINUS $1.50 coupon
-Children's Dimetapp - Regular Price $6.49 on sale for $6.00 MINUS $2.00 coupon
-Children's PediaCare - Regular Price $7.99 on sale for $6.00 MINUS $1.50 coupon
-Children's Benadryl - Regular Price $7.19 on sale for $5.00
-Children's Triaminic - Regular Price $7.99 on sale for $6.00
-1 Edge Infused Shave Gel - Regular Price $3.29 on sale for $2.19 MINUS FREE coupon

Now here is the good part! So you are wondering why I bought so much OTC medicines, right? Well, when you buy $20 in children's meds, you get $10 ExtraBucks!! So it is the same as spending $9.50 on all of it. Then I also got $5 ExtraBucks for spending $15 on candy, so Santa got the hookup already. It is safely packed away in the closet until it goes into the stockings!

I also had a $5 off Rite Aid coupon, since they take cempetitor's coupons, & also $19 in ExtraBucks from my last visit. Now I have $15 ExtraBucks for the next visit & also another $5 Rite Aid coupon.

Coupons & Sales Are Worth Every Penny!

So I have decided to step it up with the coupons & have really saved some major "change" at Publix. With http://www.southernsavers.com/ as my guide, I made my 2nd run today. You can look at the picture of what all I got. Here is the breakdown & how I did it:

  • 12 double rolls of Quilted Northern, on sale for $5.99, minus $2 Rite Aid coupon, minus $1 manf. coupon. (Regular $8.49, saved $5.50)

  • Electrasol Dish Detergent on sale for $$3.99, minus $1 coupon. (Regular $4.39, saved $1.40)

  • Doritos (2) BOGO! (Regular $3.99/ea, saved $3.98)

  • Smart Taste pastas (2) Regular $1.50/ea minus $1 off 2. (Total $2 for 2, saved $1)

  • Publix Premium Bread- FREE with purchase of Hormel lunch meat (saved $1.69)

  • Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce (2) Regular $1.39/ea. (saved $.78 total)

  • All 32 load Detergent, on sale for $2.99 & $1 off coupon. (Regular $5.39, saved $3.40)

  • Quaker Granola Bars (2) regular $2.99/ea plus $1 off 2. (Regular $5.98, saved 3.98)

  • 5lb White Potatoes regular $3.49 on sale for $1.99. (saved $1.50)

  • 4 pack GreenWise Toilet Paper- PENNY ITEM! (saved $2.38)

  • Ball Park Franks regular $3.99, on sale for $2.50 plus $1 coupon (saved $2.49)

  • Maybelline Pulsing Mascara regular $11.99, stacked $3 manf coupon with $3 store coupon (saved $6!)

  • Crisco EVOO regular $6.49, on sale for $3.25 (saved $3.24)

  • Fresh Corn (not pictured) regular $4.80 for 8, on sale for $2 for 8 (saved $2.80)

  • 3.25lbs ground chuck (not pictured) regular $10.32, on sale for $6.65 (saved $3.67)

That's a total of $70.80. How much did I pay? $26.99! That's a savings of $43.81, or 62%!

Now there are a few things I could have waited & probably gotten better prices on, or waited on a coupon, but I needed them, so I went for it. The trick is that you gotta eat what's on sale but if I can feed a family of 5 for under $30 a week, I'll do it!

Homemade Baby Food

I never thought of making my baby's food when Nathan was little. I thought it was soooo hard & SURELY it wasn't something that I could do! Man was I wrong. It is actually easier & way more cost-effective. Not to mention that our babies are eating real foods, experiencing REAL flavor, & we're cutting out all the preservatives & add-ins. Have you ever tried baby food? It doesn't taste like the real thing. Some of them are not even close! Then we wonder why the transition to table food is so hard! We think, "Hey,my baby has been eating peas & carrots for MONTHS,so why won't he eat the real thing?" It is because of both taste & texture. By making our own foods, we can control how thick/thin we want it & adjust it for our little ones. Customizable baby food! We can control texture & build them up to the real thing. Is it really more work? No, not with proper planning. You may find it easier than going to the store for random jars, then realizing you bought the wrong stuff. Even working mommies can do it by just sparing an hour on an off day. How much of a super mom would you look like by dropping your little one off at day care WITH her homemade food? Other mommies would be so envious! lol

Ok, so here are my directions for making your own foods. I will be adding in pictures & a few videos soon. Any questions, ask away.

First off, pick a food to prep. Start out with one per week. I usually go with whatever is on sale that week. If you can, do 2 foods, like a fruit & a veggie. Now, we are starting with 1st foods, so these are simple, 1 ingredient foods. I am starting today with carrots.

CARROTS
I used a 2lb bag of carrots. You can either steam them in a steamer, microwave them in a steam bag, or my way is to put them in a pot with just enough water to cover them. You will also need ice trays & a freezer bag.

-Gather your materials:

Ice cube trays, cutting board, peeler, knife, marker, pan & lid, food processor, freezer bags

-Wash carrots, then cut off the end:

-Peel & then wash again:

-Cut into chunks:

-Put in a pan with just enough water to cover :

-Put on the lid & cook over med/high for about 30 minutes.
Check & add water as needed.
When tender (not falling apart), drain & rinse.
DO NOT SAVE WATER!!! (Can contain nitrates)

-Process in a processor, or with a simple strainer, or masher:
See video below for straining instructions.

-When smooth, fill ice trays & freeze until solid:

-After solid, dump into a labeled freezer bag. Bag shoulbe labeled with the name & date:

Place bag in the freezer:

(I know some of you were wondering about sweet potatoes, since I said I was going to do that too, so here is a quick rundown to "hold you over".)

SWEET POTATOES
-Wash, poke holes, then wrap in foil. Bake at

375F for about 45 minutes. Check for tenderness. Allow to cool & then cut longways. Scoop out all the meat & toss the skins. Process in a processor. If you mash by hand, make sure to strain it through a strainer to get rid of the stringy stuff. Follow the rest of the directions as above. I always strain potatoes to get them smooth enough. A Magic Bullet will usually do a great job of it though. You can also add a little cinnamon, but I would wait until you have tried it out for a week to check for a reaction.

Effective Biblical Discipline

Creative Discipline Ideas
by Lisa Whelchel

As you well know, the parenting adventure is different with each child — and it's vital to recognize and adapt to your children's various temperaments, strengths, and weaknesses. Think of yourself as a sculptor shaping and molding the lives of your young ones. With each child, you may be working with a different medium. You could be endeavoring to form one youngster who appears to be as hard as marble. As an artist, you might use a chisel, hammers, even water, while sculpting your masterpiece. You may have another child who is more pliable, like clay. Even then, as a potter, you might use fire, a knife, and your bare hands.

It doesn't matter what substance you're working with, be it wood, ice, bronze, wax, sand, steel, or foam. Each raw material requires a distinct combination of tools to strike the balance between respecting its uniqueness and steadfastly pursuing the potential beauty within.
In the following articles, I will present different tools and creative ways to use them as we allow the Lord to work through us, shaping our children in His image (see Colossians 3:10). You'll see, there's no reason discipline has to be boring!

Experiment. If one idea doesn't work, try something else and come at it from another direction. But don't dismiss a failed method altogether; it may work on another child or at another stage of childhood. Believe me, your departure from the ordinary ways of correction will keep your kids on their toes, wondering what you'll next pull out of your bag of tricks. The road is long, but it doesn't have to be dull.

Circle of Support

BABY GAGA DECEMBER 2008 CLIQUE

I happened upon Baby Gaga right after I found out I was pregnant. I made friends with an awesome group of ladies who were all due at the same time. We've been there for each other through it all & even though our group has gotten smaller, we are STILL there for each other.
